Millrose Games
The 106th Millrose Games took place this past weekend in NYC at the Armory. It was great to be kind of in my home court between competing at the Armory, where I have competed since I was in high school, and competing in my sponsor’s backyard (the NYAC)! Also, the officials at this meet are always so wonderful to us! I have known the officials since high school so it is always great to see familiar faces.
Warmups went well, so I came in at 4.40m (14’5) which is the highest I have ever come in at. The progression was 4.20 to 4.40 and at this point 4.20 is too low for me to start at when I have goals of jumping high. I cleared 4.40 easy on my first attempt and needed to go up a pole because it mushed out on me. I went up a pole and was feeling good and just focusing on executing my jumps. Well I missed 2 attempts at 4.55m (14’11) and the other two girls still in the competition had cleared the height so my coach told me to pass to 4.65m (15’3) to give me a little more rest time between jumps. I made an adjustment by going up another pole and adjusted my standards a bit. I took a deep breath and told myself to execute and not “try” hard to do something. Well the vault was pretty good as my hips were over the bar, but I didn’t let go of the pole in time to allow my body to clear it on the back side…so once again I was over the bar and didn’t clean it up enough to allow the bar to stay. SOOOOO FRUSTRATING!!! I was so upset after because once again everything was lined up well the entire day, yet I couldn’t get the dang bars to stay for me. This event truly tests you, that’s for sure. In analyzing my competition videos from my last 3 competitions, we see what the issue is that causes me to have great height over bars, yet clip the bar on the backside. So I have 2 weeks until Indoor Nationals and we know what to work on in drills and vault sessions. I can’t wait til Nationals because Albuquerque is a great place to jump! I am vaulting the best I ever have and everything is coming together so I know big things are right around the corner. After a little more training I will be so anxious to get back out on the runway and put things together for some high heights :)
